Developing working memory is vital to a child's ability to develop focus and self control. Increasing working memory will help children succeed in school and focus on tasks. Elevate is rated as one of the highest games for effectiveness in training the brain to follow tasks and quickly transition to another task. Plus, the kids love it!
This game is designed to work on memory and spacial awareness. The interactive challenges are fun for kids to complete. When using memory games, children "involve the skill of cognitive flexibility" (Galinsky, 55). If you want a fun tool to help with flexibility and focus on directions, it is worth the dollar!
It is important to intertwine a lesson plan with technology. During Small groups, I had my kids work in teams of four to create a blue print, build the structure in the block area, and then edit the blueprint to make structural changes. This multi-step process is vital for children to "promote working memory-have children make plans, follow plans, and then discuss what they accomplished" (Galinsky, 56). The exercise worked well for my students on many different levels. They used cooperative learning, they used visual planning, they used engineering, social skills, etc. I highly recommend this as a tool in your classroom.
This app is great and fun for multiple learning styles. It automatically adjusts for your ability level and is great for projecting and completing together as a large group. Fun, simple, easy and free!
